10 Common Website Mistakes to Avoid
I've reviewed hundreds of business websites in Singapore. The same mistakes appear again and again - mistakes that cost traffic, leads, and sales. Here's what to avoid.
Design and User Experience Mistakes
1. Cluttered homepage
Trying to say everything results in saying nothing. Your homepage should have one clear message and one clear action.
2. No clear call-to-action
Visitors don't know what you want them to do. Every page should guide them toward a specific action: contact, call, buy, subscribe.
3. Not mobile-friendly
70% of your visitors are on phones. If your site doesn't work perfectly on mobile, you're losing most of your potential customers.
4. Slow loading speed
53% of visitors leave if a page takes over 3 seconds to load. Check your speed on Google PageSpeed Insights.
5. Hard to find contact information
Phone, email, address, WhatsApp should be visible on every page. Don't make people hunt for how to reach you.
Content and Messaging Mistakes
6. Talking about yourself, not your customers
"We are the leading..." "Our company was founded in..." Nobody cares. Talk about how you solve customer problems.
7. No social proof
No testimonials, reviews, client logos, or case studies. Visitors wonder if anyone has actually used and recommended you.
8. Generic stock photos
The same smiling businesspeople handshake photo appears on a million sites. Use real photos of your team, office, and work.
9. Outdated information
Copyright 2019. Events from last year. Old team members. It signals the business isn't active or paying attention.
10. No value before asking for something
Immediately demanding email signup or contact info before providing any value. Give something useful first.
Quick Fixes
- Audit your homepage - is the message clear in 5 seconds?
- Test your site on mobile - can you do everything easily?
- Run a speed test - address issues that come up
- Add testimonials - even 3-5 good ones help
- Update your copyright year and remove old content
- Make contact info clickable (click-to-call, click-to-email)
Most of these fixes aren't expensive - they just require attention. Review your site with fresh eyes (or ask someone else to) and tackle the issues one by one. Each fix improves your chances of converting visitors into customers.
